THUR. FEB. 26 - 10PM - 18+
SCOTLAND YARD GOSPEL CHOIR
The Scotland Yard Gospel Choir makes no attempt to disguise its adoration for wispy chamber-pop avatars Belle and Sebastian, right down to bookish couplets that rhyme "cuticles" with "pharmaceuticals." But that doesn't diminish the plaintive beauty of the group's unfailingly melodic, unabashedly compassionate orchestral-pop songs.
ALASKA! (mbrs of Folk Implosion, ex Lowercase)
Featuring members of the New Folk Implosion, Sebadoh and Lowercase, the Los Angeles based duo of Imaad Wasif (guitar, vocals) and Russell Pollard (bass, drums and vocals,) has created a sound of revolutionary originality. Infectious harmonies and sinewy guitars float in a symphonic wilderness that is eclipsed only by the weight of the words.
TIM RUTILI (Califone/Ugly Cassanova/ex-Red Red Meat)
The music he makes with others originally reeks: an atmosphere, new chicago blues, a beauty, a rare thing, nothing to do with boogie chillin' in the same way that John Lee don't play kora. A voice that's not quite shredded hits the mic on a direct line from the back of a throat that never touches his lips.

tickets are cheap [$9 online] and alaska is pretty awesome. i imagine tim rutili will be cool to see/hear as well. i haven't heard scotland yard but as i like belle & sebastian less and less, i imagine i might cut out part-way through their set unless they are really awesome somehow. but i kind of doubt it.
